Blood falls like rain . . .

“Syn,” Kyth sighed. “Have you seen anything?”
“Not yet,” Syn turned his head slowly, glancing around. He was sitting on top of the roof of a clothing store. They were in a strip mall; the kind where each store was attached to the ones next to it. It was interesting, they had to admit.
Hykuma stood around, looking nervous.
“They might have given us the wrong coordinates,” Kyth muttered. “Idiots.”
“Wait,” Syn turned, head lifted high. “I think I smell something.”
“You can’t smell anything, you moron,” Kyth snapped. “Come down from there and let’s…” She paused.
She did smell something.
It was a weird mixture of rotting carcass and molding fruit.
“Ugh,” Hykuma covered her nose. “That’s disgusting…”
“Told you I smelled something,” He said proudly.
“Shut up, it’s getting closer,” Kyth hissed. The smell was becoming overpowering. Though Syn didn’t seem to mind it, even Kyth had started gagging on it. Hykuma looked about ready to pass out.
Syn leapt down to the ground, lifted Hykuma into his arms, and then leapt back onto the roof.
“It’s not as bad up here,” He said gently, and laid her down. “Stay here, Hykuma.”
She looked at him as he stood, looking around. His face was deadly serious.
“Syn,” Kyth gasped, the smell beginning to become too much. “Whatever it is, get it!”
“Yes master,” Syn grinned.
He leapt off, disappearing.
For a couple minutes, the scent stayed, becoming stronger and stronger. Then, without warning, it simply disappeared. There wasn’t a scent left of it in the air.
Hykuma removed her hands from her nose, confused.
“What…?” She began.
“Shh,” Kyth told her, and glanced around. Her markings began to glow.
A Cauldwyn burst from around the corner, roaring furiously. It threw its head around, snarling fiercely, its tail whipping around, crashing through buildings. On the Cauldwyn’s back sat Syn, cackling as he held on by shoving his dagger deeper into the creature’s back.
“Syn, it’s a retrieval mission!” Kyth cried. “Don’t kill it!”
“I’m not!” Syn said defensively. “I’m just trying to stop it from running around!”
Before he could say anything else, the Cauldwyn dropped, and he let out a yell as it rolled over on top of him.
Hykuma shrieked.
Kyth’s hands flew up and she charged at the Cauldwyn, smashing her palms against its chest. It went flying, two burn marks where Kyth had hit it. It landed with a heavy thud.
Hykuma leapt down, running over to Syn. Kyth glanced at him but kept her eye on the Cauldwyn.
“Syn!” Hykuma cried, sitting beside him. “Are you okay?!”
He lay flat on his back, moaning. “Yeah,” He took in a heavy breath. “That hurt.”
“Did you break anything?”
“Nuh uh, I just feel squashed. You might have to scrape me off the street.”
“Come on,” Hykuma took his hand and helped him up. He rubbed his hands through his hair, smearing the blood from the Cauldwyn in the white strands.
Sin stood, grinning.
“Be careful,” Hykuma begged.
Syn nodded and glanced at her, and then charged swiftly at the rising Cauldwyn.
“Get it on the ground!” Kyth said, yanking out a transporter.
Syn yanked the golden thread from its pouch, slinging it out until it wrapped firmly around the Cauldwyn’s mouth.
The smell suddenly returned again.
Hykuma let out a gasp and clutched her nose tightly, coughing. Kyth stumbled.
Syn simply grinned, unfazed.
He wrapped the Cauldwyn up with the golden thread and once it was on the ground and still, Kyth tossed the transporter over it.
“What’s that smell…?” Hykuma gasped.
“I don’t know,” Syn tilted his head. “It’s coming from nearby, though.”
“Let’s go check it out,” Kyth said. She tapped on the flat surface of the transporter and it lifted and started towards the Order.
Syn stood, drawing his golden thread back, and continued in the opposite direction. Kyth and Hykuma followed.
Though the smell got stronger, Syn remained untroubled by it. Both females were practically swooning by then, and Hykuma looked sick.
Syn turned to look at her.
He trotted over and put his arms around her. She leaned into his chest, burying her face in and taking deep, ragged breaths. Syn’s smell was drowning out the awful scent.
“Here…” Syn slipped out of his shirt and tied it firmly around Hykuma’s face. Her eyes still showed, but she gripped the shirt close and continued breathing in the scent of Syn. “Is that better?”
Hykuma nodded.
“I wonder why your smell drowns it out,” Kyth pondered.
“You can have my pants if you want,” He grinned.
“Keep your pants on,” She slapped his bare shoulder. “How much further?”
“Only a couple feet,” Syn nodded. “It’s around that corner.”
Kyth continued forward.
“Stay behind me,” Syn told Hykuma.
“Okay…” She nodded.
They both advanced forward behind Kyth.
When they turned the corner, they stared.
A liquid that looked like water filled the streets, but it moved slow and thick like molasses. The smell was nothing as sweet; the disgusting scent was now making Kyth cough. Syn still didn’t seem bothered by it, but he was grimacing at something further on.
In the thick watery substance lay several humans, below the surface, lay there. They were obviously dead; mouths wide open in a silent scream.
Even Syn looked disgusted.
“What a disgusting way to kill…” He muttered.
“Oh my god…” Hykuma looked pale.
Kyth grimaced.
Syn went over to Hykuma and pulled her face into his chest. “Don’t look at it,” He told her, pulling his shirt over her eyes.
She trembled.
“What is this?” Kyth asked, shaking.
“Don’t touch it!” Hykuma screamed.
Kyth stepped away from it.
“Do you think it’s that chemical…”
“Yes, I do…” Hykuma didn’t look. “I have a bottle in my bag… Gather some… but don’t touch it!”
Kyth took the bottle from Hykuma and went over to the liquid. Carefully, she held the bottom of the bottle, dipping it into the liquid and bringing it up. She took a cloth from her pouch and wiped the excess liquid away.
She stood and walked back to Hykuma, who popped a rubber cork on it and then slipped it in a plastic bag, placing it carefully back into her own pack.
“Let’s go,” Syn murmured. His arms stayed around her. “You shouldn’t have seen this.”
Hykuma gripped his arms tightly, trembling.
He lifted her up gently, bridal style, and carried her away carefully.
Kyth followed.
Down onto me.
