I'm being tortured on the inside . . .
[/blockquote][/blockquote]
Kyth lifted her head when she heard a door open. She looked over towards the sound and saw Nyun stepping in, holding Alabaster in his arms.
“Let him go,” Kyth whispered.
“I don’t feel like it,” Nyun sighed, and set the child beside her. Alabaster giggled and crawled over to her, lying in her lap. Her arms came around him softly, holding him against her.
Her voice was weak, “I’m sorry, Al… I’m so, so sorry…”
Alabaster looked up at her, his eyes big.
“Your father would have been so proud of you…” Kyth murmured. “Rynu…”
“All right, time’s almost up,” Nyun muttered. “This is gross enough as it is.”
Kyth held Alabaster tighter, not willing to let him go. This was the last hint of her brother that existed on earth. Alabaster would be perfect, just like Rynu.
He didn’t deserve this.
Kyth looked up at Nyun. “He can’t use his powers yet,” She told him. “I already got him to try. No matter what you do, he can’t use his powers.”
Nyun smiled slowly. It was a creepy smile, one that sent chills up Kyth’s spine. “Oh, I’ve got less… Conventional methods that can help him figure it out.”
Kyth snarled. “Don’t you dare hurt him.”
“Oh, I won’t,” Nyun smirked.
“Liar…”
“No duh,” Nyun rolled his eyes at her and swooped down, snatching Alabaster from her.
Kyth let out a cry and lurched forward, trying to get her hands on Nyun, but the chains tripped her and she fell to the ground, trembling.
“Stop!” Kyth screamed at him, stumbling to her feet.
Nyun stopped at the doorway and turned, grinning at her slowly. “Oh,” He murmured. “You really shouldn’t be screaming at me. I’ll kill you just like I did your brother; slowly and painfully.”
Kyth stared at him, trembling. He disappeared out the door.
She fell to her knees and wailed.
Syn peeked his head around the corner of the hallway Nyun was walking down. His lips pulled back into a wild grin, white hair covering his bright blue eyes.
“Hykuma,” He told her. “I need my knife.”
Her hands slipped into his for a moment, letting the knife fall into his palm. He looked back at her quietly, his eyes soft, and he gave her a firm kiss on the lips.
“It’s okay,” He told her.
Hykuma nodded quietly.
“Use your powers, please?”
“Okay.”
Syn’s thin body shot forward like a bullet, every one of his movements powerful and accurate. Gracefulness was something he never focused on, but it happened naturally.
Nyun turned just in time to yank out a sword and block Syn’s knife.
Syn snarled fiercely, pointed teeth showing.
“Damn you,” Nyun grinned, setting on the Alabaster on the ground. “I thought I had gotten you to stay down for a while longer. You’re gonna die soon anyway, might as well not waste my time with you.”
Nyun pulled back his sword swiftly and swung it back at Syn, who leapt over the silvery streak and brought his knife down towards Nyun’s head. Swiftly, the other Reacher moved out of the way, but Syn’s knife still drew blood.
Holding his wounded shoulder, Nyun laughed again.
“Who knew dead meat could be so energetic?” He smirked. “You’re gonna die soon, Syn Intuma, and no one can do a thing about it.”
Syn grinned. “I bet,” His grin turned into a hiss. “There’s a lot of people to kill down in Hell.”
“Good thing too,” Nyun lifted his sword, ready to strike. “Because that’s where you’re going!”
At the last word, his sword came down, and Syn danced out of the way, cackling.
“You’re no different!” He cried, sniggering.
Nyun let out a frustrated growl.
“That’s it, time to get dirty,” He muttered, and held his hand up.
Syn screeched as a high-pitched sound entered his ears. Blood began to dribble out, and he covered his ears quickly, snarling.
Without warning, Nyun dropped, unconscious.
Syn lifted his head slowly, looking back at Hykuma, who’s hand was lifted and shaking.
“Are you okay?” She asked him, rushing over.
“Can’t hear well,” Syn mumbled.
Hykuma carefully looked into his ears, but she couldn’t see anything because of the darkness of the hallway.
“It’ll heal,” She assured him.
Syn nodded and then looked around, blue eyes tired. He was getting exhausted.
“It’s not like you to get tired so quickly…” Hykuma murmured, watching him anxiously.
“I’m fine,” Syn stood slowly, hands trembling a bit. Hykuma looked at him worriedly. The chemical seemed to be moving into its second stage.
“We have to hurry,” Hykuma told him, touching his arm.
“Yeah,” Syn lifted his head more and then he looked at her. “Stay here, I’ll be right out.”
“Okay,” Hykuma nodded.
Syn messed with the door’s lock before he finally just snapped the entire handle off.
“It’s unlocked!” He said cheerfully, and wriggled through the opening into the room.
“How convenient,” Hykuma looked after him.
Kyth looked up as Syn entered, and she stood swiftly. “Did he hurt you? Your ears…”
“I’m fine,” Syn gave her a cocky grin. “I wouldn’t die before I could kill you, now would I?”
“True,” Kyth shrugged. “Let’s get out of here.”
Syn nodded, but he looked distressed.
“What’s wrong?” Kyth asked him.
Leaning down to mess with the chains that held her, Syn mumbled, “Getting tired.”
“You never get tired,” Kyth insisted, and Syn pulled back the sleeve on his arm, showing her the purple splotch that indicated the chemical that had spilled on to him. The skin had already begun to burn away.
Syn looked down a bit. “I don’t have long, so we have to hurry and get Alabaster and you home.”
“Really?!” Syn asked, looking up at her.
“Yeah,” Kyth leaned down beside Nyun and dug around in his pockets for a minute. She pulled a slip of paper from him and held it out to Syn.
Hykuma jumped forward and took it, reading it quickly and fiercely.
“Why didn’t I think of that?!” She cried, and took Syn’s hand. “We have to go. Now!”
Syn nodded, eyes half closed from exhaustion. No one had ever seen him this tired before.
Kyth lifted Alabaster into her arms, and he gurgled at her, giggling.
“Syn…” Hykuma whispered suddenly.
Kyth looked up and saw Syn slumped against the walls. “I’m fine…” He mumbled quietly. His eyes closed, and he was suddenly very unconscious.
“Syn!” Hykuma screamed, shaking him. “No! No, wake up!”
“Take Al,” Kyth demanded, giving the small boy to Hykuma. She held onto him closely, shaking. Kyth ducked down and heaved Syn onto her shoulder, muttering, “Damn it Syn, if you die, I’m going to have to kill you!”
Syn felt like on her shoulders. She had always been surprised at how he, the mass-murderer, was so thin, so flimsy-looking. His muscles, however, she could feel the weight of as she lifted him up with a grunt.
“Let’s go, now,” Kyth told Hykuma, who gave a nod and followed at a rushing pace.
Kyth ran faster than her body wanted to allow her. She felt Syn’s limp body against her shoulder and she knew that soon, he wouldn’t wake up. There was no time to waste; they needed to hurry.
“Hykuma, go ahead and get the cure ready!” Kyth called back to her. “I’m going to see if I can get a car.”
“Okay!” Hykuma nodded and leapt off faster than Kyth could see.
Kyth moved towards a road and spotted someone who had pulled over at the side of the road. She landed beside them and swiftly jabbed a pressure point in their back, causing then to collapse. She tossed Syn unceremoniously into the front seat and slipped into the driver’s seat, blasting her powers against the car to get it to restart.
She drove off with a bang and a loud engine roaring in her ears. She glanced over at Syn, who had his cheek squished against the window and his knee jammed against his chest, but she doubted it would hurt him. He was tougher than he looked.
She sped, but was good enough to where she wasn’t spotted by any cops. That wouldn’t have been fair to Syn.
Swiftly, she pulled into Reacher Territory and, seeing that the gates were closed and knowing she didn’t have her ID card on her, she just kept driving. Upon impact to the safety
pole, the car let out a groan and the pole creaked and snapped, falling onto the road with a clatter as other Reachers rushed after her.
Kyth kept on driving, completely focused on getting Syn to the Infirmary.
The second she reached the building, she yanked open the car door and grabbed Syn by his shoulder, pulling him out. She slung him over her shoulder once more and the Reachers that had been following her came to a stop, seeing who she was. They watched as she disappeared into the building.
The Infirmary was abuzz as Hykuma took the cure from a test tube. She looked nervous about giving it to Syn, but slowly, she smeared it on his skin and then put some in an IV that she hooked up to him.
Kyth stood against the wall, panting. She was scared.
Another nurse handed Al to her, and she reluctantly left to go give the little one back to Emily, who was waiting in her office.
Emily leapt up when Kyth entered, and she held Al against her closely. “Alabaster!” She gasped. “Oh, Al… Al…”
“He’s okay,” Kyth told her, looking weary and upset. “He didn’t get hurt.”
“Thank god,” Emily held her baby close and hid her tears from her sister-in-law. Kyth simply looked away politely as Emily cried to herself.
It had been a long day. She was exhausted and she just wanted to lie down and sleep, but… Syn. Syn was in danger.
“I gotta go,” Kyth muttered, and she stood. She disappeared out the door with Emily staring after her.
As she walked, her breaths heaved. Her mind was reeling. So much had happened in such a short amount of time; she needed to slow down.
She leaned against the wall and stood there, trembling. She had never felt so lost before. Suddenly, everything that had happened ever since Rynu’s death came crashing down on her. Her brother was dead. Her best friend wasn’t really her friend. Syn was going to die.
Kyth collapsed against the wall and clutched her stomach. She felt sick. She didn’t know what she could do. What could she do? Her life was gone. Nyun had betrayed her, her brother had been killed.
She felt tears choke up her throat. No, she couldn’t cry, not after all that had happened, she wouldn’t cry…
Kyth couldn’t fight herself. Tear by tear fell down her cheeks until she finally let out a sob, wailing. Her lungs burned as she screamed through the hallways, and she cried and cried until she had nothing left. No one came to see her. They all knew what had happened; Kyth Kimata had cried for the first time.
Her brother was gone. Her friend was gone. Her partner was dying. She had no other friends, no one.
Suddenly, she felt a small hand on her arm, and sniffling, she opened her eyes to look down at the blue-eyed Alabaster. “A-Al,” She whispered, and lifted him into her arms. She held him close to her and cried as he played with her long, silvery hair.
“Kyth,” Al’s little baby voice sounded in her ear, and she lifted her head, looking at him. He was watching her with big blue eyes, curious. “Kyth,” He said again.
Kyth gave a pitiful little sniffle and held him closer, smiling softly.
“Kyth,” Emily’s voice said softly. “I know it’s hard without Rynu nearby all the time… And I know you act tough so no one will think that you miss him too much… But it’s really okay to cry. You can’t bottle everything up inside, it just hurts.” Emily’s arms came around her and she hugged her close. Kyth curled around Alabaster, leaned against Emily and cried quietly.
It took her a while to stop. Who could blame her? She was a girl who had never cried in front of anyone before, and had vowed never to. And now, after so long with dealing with the death of the one person she really loved, the betrayal of someone who thought she was her best friend, and even now, Syn’s looming danger, she could finally let it out.
Emily and Al sat with her, assuring her that she wasn’t as alone as she thought.
After a while, Kyth managed to calm her nerves. She wiped her tears away and silently stood, handing Alabaster to Emily.
“I have to go see,” Kyth said quietly, and she walked down the hallways.
Relieved of her burdens, she went to ask the hardest question; is Syn still alive?
She couldn’t even think to prepare herself for the hardest answer; No.
My blood turns ice cold.
