No one can ever love me again . . .
[/i]
Nyun smiled when she saw him again. “How was it?” He asked.
“It was fine,” Kyth smiled back. “Just exhausting, and there was some trouble…”
“What kind of trouble?” Nyun tilted his head.
“Well there was a group of Reachers asking for something called ‘the key’,” Kyth sighed. “They were beating up two other Reachers, Vyna and Dyn.”
“What did you do with them?” Nyun asked, smile fading.
“We brought Vyna and Dyn back,” Kyth tilted her head back slightly. “And we killed the group of Reachers.”
“Ah…” Nyun looked out the window quietly, looking like he was lost in thought.
“What is it?” She asked.
“I’m just wondering what this key is they’re talking about…”
“Dyn said Kona knows, so that’s who I’m going to ask right now,” Kyth told him, and swept past him.
Nyun followed closely.
The two arrived at Kona’s apartment, and Kyth knocked on the door.
Kona answered, her head peeking out. “Yes?” She asked. “Oh, hi.”
“Hello,” Kyth greeted her. “I was wondering… There have been some incidents lately, and… Well… I need to know what the key is.”
Kona stiffened, and then glanced at Nyun. “I can tell you but not him.”
Nyun bristled and Kyth demanded, “Why can’t you? He’s my friend.”
“Rynu told me that if he died, to tell no one but you,” Kona insisted. “I can’t even tell the new Leader.”
Kyth’s breath caught in her throat. There was a new Leader? Already?
Nyun gave a nod. “It’s all right,” He told Kyth. “I’ll be in my office, all right?”
Kyth nodded, looking up at him. He smiled slightly and his fingers gently caressed her cheek, making her pale skin blush crimson. His fingers ran through her silky hair for a moment, and then he turned and walked away, silent.
Kyth looked after him, giving a shaky sigh.
“Are you two dating?” Kona asked as Kyth slipped into the room.
“No,” Kyth looked back towards the door.
“Why not?” Kona sat slowly in a chair, motioning to the one across from the coffee table for Kyth to settle in.
“I don’t know…” Kyth sat, pondering. “He’s my friend, I’ve known him since I was little, so it’d be weird if we just…”
“Started dating?” Kona looked sympathetic for her. “Yeah, it turns out like that sometimes. Though, me and my boyfriend were friends way before we started dating.”
“Wow,” Kyth sighed. “Well… That’s not what I came here to talk about…”
“Right,” Kona shook her head. “Rynu was asked to go on a mission by himself.”
“That’s odd,” Kyth mused.
“I thought it was too, until I found out it was a Level 30 mission.”
Kyth stared at her. “There’s no such thing,” She stammered. “There’d have to be some death threat to the whole universe with something more powerful then gravity itself!”
Kona nodded quietly.
Kyth’s eyes widened. “What was it?”
Kona sighed slowly, and then said, “There was testing for some new chemicals that could kill Reachers eventually.”
“The chemical that put that guy in a coma,” Kyth nodded.
“He died yesterday,” Kona said quietly.
“Oh…” Kyth frowned deeply.
“But… He woke up right before he died and gave us this…” Kona leaned forward, handing Kyth a crumpled piece of paper. “He was holding it the entire time and wouldn’t let go of it…”
Kyth took the note and read it.The key is not the cure
“So…” Kyth’s head tilted. “The key is not the cure.”
“The key was supposedly supposed to be the answer to the cure if the poison got on you,” Kona sighed. “But it didn’t happen, obviously…”
“So what’s the key?” Kyth asked.
Kona looked up at her. “It’s the one thing someone would need if they were going to take over the whole world.”
Kyth blinked. “What is it?”
Shakily, Kona said, “It’s the Ever Power.”
“What’s the Ever Power?” Kyth asked, feeling stupid now.
“It’s a legendary power that was a myth for centuries,” Kona lowered her head slightly. “It’s a combination power of control over a body, decomposition at amazing speeds, and of course, creating things from nothingness.”
“But…” Kyth took in a shaky breath. “That’s Rynu’s, Syn’s, and my power all put together.”
“Exactly,” Kona nodded. “It’s a deadly power that no one would be able to fight.”
Kyth covered her face with her hands, leaning over so her elbows rested on her knees.
“I have the key,” She said quietly, and Kona’s head snapped up.
“Where is it?” Kona asked, voice hushed and hurried.
“Rynu brought a book home,” Kyth tilted her head. “And gave it to Emily. I got it when I brought her here.”
Kona frowned. “It isn’t a book…”
“Oh…” Kyth glanced off to the side, wondering what the book exactly was.
There was a knock on the door and Kona looked up. She stood and peered through the looking hole, and then said, “It’s your friend.”
“Oh,” Kyth stood, looking troubled. She said goodbye to Kona and then slipped outside, where Nyun hugged her.
“Hey,” He grinned.
“Why are you hugging me?” Kyth laughed.
“Because…” Nyun frowned slightly. “Something happened to Syn.”
“What?” Kyth asked, pulling away from him. Her face was angry and upset. “What happened to him?”
“He was walking home and somehow… The chemical…”
“NO!” Kyth screamed, and she ran towards the Infirmary, light as a feather, quicker than a cheetah.
She stumbled into the Infirmary and went to where Syn was normally held when he got hurt.
Hykuma was in there, sobbing.
Syn lay on the bed, looking at his arm, which had a splotch of purple on it. He looked bewildered.
“Syn,” Kyth panted.
Syn looked up at her quietly. He looked away, his blue eyes dull.
Kyth was shaking. “Y…You…” She whispered. “Why you…”
Syn said, “I didn’t see anything. I just felt this big wet thing hit my arm. I didn’t bother with it, and Hykuma saw my arm had turned purple by the time I got home…”
Hykuma shook her head, tears flying, unable to speak. Syn sat up and carefully put his arms around her. She buried against his chest, and he lay down again, letting her rest against him. He sighed heavily.
Kyth shook. “Syn…” She whispered. “I d…don’t know what to do…”
Syn looked up at her, his blue eyes dull. “Neither do I,” He said quietly. He then smiled slightly, weakly. She’s never seen him smile such a sad smile. “At least I got to kill a bunch before I die.”
“You’re not gonna die,” Kyth said stubbornly.
Hykuma whispered, her voice frail, “It already started going through his skin… This time tomorrow he’ll be in a coma…”
“What about the fact that it can’t chew threw calcium?” Kyth asked, getting desperate. “Just throw some milk on him!”
Hykuma shook her head. “It doesn’t work,” She whimpered.
Kyth sat heavily against the wall, her silvery hair falling around her in curtains. Her brother had probably died because of this chemical, though not from it. Kyth was almost sure of it. Rynu had gotten too close and had gotten killed because of it.
This meant someone who was over Level 30 was controlling all of this.
“Oh my god…” Kyth moaned suddenly. “Oh my god I’m an idiot…”
“What is it?” Hykuma looked up quietly.
“Rynu gave me everything I needed…” She said quietly. “He gave me Kona by telling me to get the Black Binta, he gave me everything that had to do with the Order, and that book, Emily would have thought that was from the Order too. The book is the key!”
“The key…?” Hykuma began, but Kyth was already darting off down the room.
She shot past everyone and everything, leaping over anything that stood in her way. She had to save Syn.
When she got to her house, she quickly went into the library, where she had carelessly placed the book on her desk for later inspection. Alabaster had somehow gotten out of his crib again, and he was toddling around, giggling.
Kyth opened the book.
The pages were completely blank.
“No!” Kyth cried. “No!” She flipped desperately through the leafy old pages, searching for anything.
Wait. Was that a flash of black?
Swiftly, she flipped backwards, and she stared at the note that Rynu had left them.
Alabaster is the key
[/center]Kyth turned her head slowly and stared at the white-haired, blue-eyed baby. He looked up at her and gurgled, drool dribbling down his chin.
“Syn’s dead,” Kyth moaned.
Alabaster giggled.
Kyth went over to him and lifted him up, looking at him quietly. Alabaster looked back at her with big blue eyes.
She murmured, “Do you know the cure, Al? Hm?”
“Cure,” He chirped, giggling.
Kyth smiled sadly.
“Rynu would have been so proud of you…” Kyth curled the little baby close to her, and he nuzzled against her, gurgling in contentment.
“Cure,” Alabaster mumbled.
Kyth looked down at him, confused. He must just be repeating what she had said, but… Why did she feel hope in her heart? She had taught herself not to feel hope a long time ago.
“Creature,” Alabaster chirped.
Kyth went rigid, staring at him.
Alabaster smiled at her. “Cure,” He told her. “Creature.”
Was she really talking to a two month old baby?
“The creatures are the cure…?” Kyth tried.
Alabaster started wiggling, and Kyth put him down, letting him toddle out of the room. Kyth followed, confused.
The little baby continued through the house until he reached her study, where he looked up at the sword that Rynu had given her in his will.
“What is it?” Kyth asked, lifting it up. Carefully, she lowered it to let Alabaster look at it. He touched the flat of the blade and shivered slightly.
The blade began to glow.
“Holy sh…” Kyth stopped herself, staring.
Dark etchings appeared on the blade of the sword, the names of chemicals and substances she didn’t recognize. She knew one of them; calcium.
The cure.
Quickly, she leapt up and grabbed a piece of paper and pen, and began furiously writing down the words.
Alabaster giggled at her desperation.
Kyth lifted him up and put him back in his crib, and then went back to the study, putting the sword up. She looked at it in the case and reached out to take it with her, and then turned once more and strode off swiftly.
She was reaching for the doorknob with the doorbell rang. She jumped slightly and peeked out the peek hole. It was Nyun, standing there, looking anxious.
She opened the door. “Hey,” She said. “What’s up?”
“I just…” Nyun gave a heavy sigh. “I know you’re working on that chemical stuff, and since Rynu had something to do with it, I… I know you might be hurt really bad, so… I wanted to tell you something…”
Kyth’s head tilted quietly. “What is it?” She asked, voice quiet.
“I… Really like you…” Nyun sighed shakily. “And I want to know if… You like me back…”
Kyth’s eyes widened slightly. “Nyun,” She said quietly, and suddenly he lurched forward and kissed her firmly.
Both green and purple eyes shot open wide, startled. She hadn’t expected her first kiss to come so… Suddenly. And from Nyun, of all people. Then again, could it have ended any other way? No one else had ever been able to make her smile or blush or be calm like Nyun.
However…
She couldn’t put her guard down around him for some reason. Only Rynu and Syn could let her put her guard down. Not Nyun. Why? What about him set her on edge...?
Kyth let her eyes close, let her worries and thoughts slip away from her. Who cared about any of that stuff? Nyun liked her like this, and she had decided she liked him back.
“I like you too,” Kyth smiled slightly.
Nyun gave a relieved laugh, and then peered into her house, head tilting. “So the kid and your sister-in-law’s here, right?”
“Mm hm,” Kyth looked back into the house. “But I have to go right now, it’s an emergency.”
“What is it?” Nyun looked startled.
“Syn got splattered with the chemical,” Kyth told him. “And I’m afraid that he’s gonna die soon if I don’t get this to him.” She held up the slip of paper with the cure on it.
“What is it?” Nyun asked, peering at it.
“The cure to the chemical,” Kyth grinned. “Rynu must have engraved it on his sword and used his powers-the power to create things out of nothing-and matched it so that only if Alabaster touched it could anyone see it. He knew no one but me would ever let Alabaster touch the sword, so it was a sure-fire way of getting the cure to me, which is the same reason why he told me to go save Kona the night he died, because she knew what the key was.”
“Catch your breath there,” Nyun told her, resting an elbow against the door frame and leaning against it, looking down at her. “So how did he find out the cure?”
“That must be why he was killed,” Kyth looked up at him. “Because he found out the cure and whoever made the chemical couldn’t have him telling everyone, so… He had my brother killed…”
Kyth looked up at Nyun. Something was bothering her. She felt like streaking out of the room as fast as she could. Why did she want to get away from the man who had just kissed her?
He had the weirdest look on his face; a look of confusion, anger, and thoughtfulness. What was he thinking?
“Nyun…?” She asked suddenly. “How did you know Rynu was involved with the chemicals?”
“You told me,” Nyun looked at her, lowering his elbow.
Kyth shook her head slowly. “No I didn’t,” She said quietly, backing away. “I didn’t tell anyone at all.”
“You just told me,” Nyun insisted, looking irritated now.
“You said Rynu was involved before I told you,” Kyth’s hand clenched around the note. Tears formed in her eyes slowly, and her throat choked up. She tried to swallow the forming tears, but it was too hard.
Betrayal.
“You killed him, didn’t you?” Kyth whispered. “You’re the one who made the chemical, and the new creatures. You needed the key because it was the only way to get the cure…”
Nyun’s frown disappeared, and he smirked. “Damn,” He sighed. “I was kind of hoping I could keep you around for a while longer.”
His hand lifted and before Kyth could cover her ears, her whole world was rattled by deep, thundering sound waves. She struggled to stay awake, but her eyes were blurring, her body was failing her. She dropped onto the ground slowly, letting out a cry.
Nyun stood over her as darkness began to take over her eyes.
“What a shame…” She thought she heard him whisper.

No one can ever hold me again.
